Passenger trains, short-line industry, port traffic, freight operations, agricultural history, and coastal railroading along the historic Coast Route.
Overview
Oxnard and Ventura form a diverse railroad area on California’s southern Central Coast. Their histories are connected through Southern Pacific’s Coast Route, Union Pacific freight operations, Amtrak passenger service, Metrolink’s Ventura County Line, and the industrial network of the Ventura County Railroad.
Oxnard functions as the principal multimodal and industrial rail hub for western Ventura County. Ventura adds coastal passenger operations, the historic Montalvo junction, and branch-line history toward the Santa Clara River Valley and Ojai.

Historical Background
Southern Pacific and the Coast Route
Oxnard and Ventura developed along Southern Pacific’s Coast Route between Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Northern California. Passenger and freight trains supported travel, mail, agriculture, industry, and regional commerce.
Agriculture and the Railroad
- Sugar-beet production
- Citrus and vegetable shipping
- Packing houses and warehouses
- Industrial sidings
- Refrigerated freight equipment
- Seasonal shipping patterns
Oxnard as a Railroad Community
The railroad helped establish Oxnard as an agricultural processing and shipping center. The modern Oxnard Transit Center continues the city’s railroad role as a combined Amtrak, Metrolink, and bus hub.
Ventura and the Coast Line
Ventura’s railroad history developed along the coastal route through town. The downtown station provides Pacific Surfliner access near the waterfront, while East Ventura serves regular Metrolink trains in the Montalvo area.
Ventura, Ojai, and the Branch-Line Story
A former branch diverged near Ventura Junction and extended inland along the Ventura River toward Ojai. Its former right-of-way, historic sites, and relationship with agricultural development deserve future WRA documentation.
Passenger Rail Operations
Oxnard Transit Center
Oxnard is served by the Pacific Surfliner, Coast Starlight, and Metrolink Ventura County Line, making it the principal passenger-rail hub in western Ventura County.
Ventura-Downtown/Beach
The downtown Ventura station is served by Pacific Surfliner trains and provides a coastal setting near downtown, the fairgrounds, beaches, and the Santa Barbara Channel. The Coast Starlight passes through but does not make a scheduled stop.
East Ventura (Montalvo)
East Ventura, historically associated with Montalvo, is the endpoint of regular Metrolink Ventura County Line service. It lies off the main Coast Route on the former Santa Paula Branch alignment, so Pacific Surfliner trains do not serve it.
Ventura County Railroad
The Ventura County Railroad is the primary Class III short-line industrial railroad serving Oxnard and Port Hueneme. It connects local industries and port facilities with Union Pacific at Oxnard.
Genesee & Wyoming acquired the operating railroad in 2012. The system has about 12 miles of owned, leased, or operating track and provides services that include port-related and industrial freight movement, transloading, industrial development, and railcar storage.
Port of Hueneme Operations
The railroad’s most distinctive role is providing freight access between Oxnard and the Port of Hueneme. Port and industrial operations create a rail environment that differs substantially from the passenger-focused activity at Oxnard Transit Center and the Ventura stations.
Interchange and Industrial Service
The Ventura County Railroad interchanges with Union Pacific at Oxnard, linking local customers and port traffic with the national freight network. Potential documentation subjects include short-line locomotives, industrial switching, port trackage, interchange movements, freight-car variety, warehouses, and customer facilities.
Freight Railroad Operations
Freight railroading in the area involves two distinct systems: Union Pacific handles mainline Coast Route traffic, while the Ventura County Railroad provides short-line switching and port-oriented industrial service in Oxnard and Port Hueneme.
- Union Pacific manifest and local freight movements
- Ventura County Railroad industrial switching
- Port of Hueneme rail traffic
- Interchange operations at Oxnard
- Agricultural and industrial customers
- Maintenance-of-way activity
- Freight and passenger interactions
Montalvo and the Santa Paula Branch
Montalvo was historically an important junction east of central Ventura. The former branch connected the Coast Route with Santa Paula, Fillmore, agricultural districts, oil-related facilities, and other Santa Clara River Valley customers. It should eventually receive dedicated route coverage.
