Railroad Museums
Preserving the places, equipment, archives, and stories that keep the railroad history of the American West alive.
Overview
Railroad history survives because thousands of people chose to save it.
When steam locomotives were scrapped, streetcar systems abandoned, depots demolished, and branch lines removed, preservationists stepped forward to rescue equipment, collect photographs, record memories, preserve documents, and establish museums. Today, those museums serve as custodians of western railroad history.
The Museums section of Western Rail Archive documents the institutions that preserve and interpret the railroads, transit systems, and transportation networks that shaped the American West.
Some museums preserve locomotives and rolling stock. Others focus on archives, model railroads, operating demonstrations, or specialized collections. Together, they tell a much larger story than any single railroad, locomotive, or location could tell alone.
Museum pages serve as both destinations and gateways, connecting visitors to related railroad, location, equipment, photography, and preservation-history articles throughout the archive. Featured museums are listed alphabetically below.

Why Museums Matter
Museums preserve more than locomotives and railcars.
- Historic photographs
- Company records
- Maps and timetables
- Restoration skills
- Oral histories
- Railroad architecture
- Community memories
- Transportation technology
Many locomotives, passenger cars, streetcars, depots, and structures featured throughout Western Rail Archive survive only because museum volunteers, preservation groups, and local communities intervened before they were lost. Without these institutions, large portions of western railroad history would exist only in photographs and memories.
