Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum

Preserving live steam engineering, operating miniature railroads, volunteer craftsmanship, and Walt Disney’s personal railroad legacy in Griffith Park.

Overview

The Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum is an all-volunteer, donor-supported organization in Griffith Park. Founded in 1956, it demonstrates live steam, gas-mechanical, and electric railroad technology in actual operation and offers public train rides when conditions permit.

Unlike a conventional static museum, LALSRM preserves the skills required to design, build, maintain, and operate miniature railroads. Its grounds also preserve Walt Disney’s Carolwood Barn and original Disneyland Railroad equipment, making the site a center of Disney railroad history.

What Is Live Steam?

Live steam locomotives are working scale machines with actual boilers, fire, water, steam pressure, cylinders, running gear, and controls. LALSRM also operates miniature locomotives using gas-mechanical, battery-electric, and other propulsion systems.

The Railroad

The museum operates across a large purpose-built railroad site with main lines, yards, sidings, tunnels, bridges, switches, buildings, signals, loading areas, and maintenance facilities. The organization states that members built most of the railroad and much of its equipment.

  • Approximately 1.5 miles of main line
  • More than 23,000 feet of installed track
  • Ground-level railroads in several gauges
  • Garden-scale and elevated Gauge-1 layouts
  • Steam, gas-mechanical, and electric locomotives
  • Functioning passenger and freight rolling stock

Volunteer Craftsmanship

  • Machining and fabrication
  • Boiler operation and maintenance
  • Track construction
  • Switch and signal work
  • Bridge and tunnel maintenance
  • Locomotive restoration
  • Train operations and visitor service

Walt Disney and the Carolwood Pacific

Walt Disney built the one-eighth-scale Carolwood Pacific Railroad at his Holmby Hills home in 1950. Its 2,615-foot route included a trestle and tunnel, and the railroad’s control and workshop center was a red barn inspired by the Disney family farm in Marceline, Missouri.

Walt Disney’s Carolwood Barn

Saving and Moving the Barn

When the Holmby Hills property changed ownership, Walt Disney’s daughter Diane Disney Miller recognized the Barn’s historical importance and initiated its preservation. Michael and Sharon Broggie assisted with the planning, and contractor Bill Abel dismantled the building for storage while agreements were developed with the City of Los Angeles and LALSRM.

The Barn was reconstructed at Los Angeles Live Steamers and opened in Griffith Park on July 19, 1999. It stands within an operating one-eighth-scale railroad environment, matching the scale of Walt Disney’s backyard railroad.

The Barn Today

The Carolwood Foundation operates the Barn on behalf of the Walt Disney Family Foundation. Public open days are generally held on the third Sunday of each month from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., subject to change. The collection includes Walt Disney’s tools, workbenches, model trains, and personal railroad artifacts.

Original Carolwood Pacific Switchboard

A key artifact in the Barn is the original switchboard used with the Carolwood Pacific Railroad. It provides a direct connection to the switches, control systems, and practical operation of Walt Disney’s private railroad.

Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland Model

The Barn collection includes a detailed model of Disneyland’s Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland. The exhibit connects Walt Disney’s railroad interests with attraction design, themed transportation, western landscapes, and the later development of Disney railroad experiences.

Original Disneyland Combination Car

Near the Carolwood Barn is the original Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad combination coach, preserved as part of the same railroad-history setting. The car is open for viewing during scheduled Carolwood public days.

Connection to Travel Town

The Disneyland combination-car design was inspired by Oahu Railway & Land Company narrow-gauge passenger equipment. Oahu Railway Combination Car No. 36 survives next door at Travel Town Museum, while the Disneyland car it helped inspire survives at Los Angeles Live Steamers.

This creates a closely connected preservation story: the Hawaiian prototype, an original Disneyland interpretation, and Walt Disney’s personal railroad workshop all survive within Griffith Park. Travel Town preserves full-size historic railroad equipment, while LALSRM emphasizes operation, engineering, craftsmanship, live steam, and the Disney railroad legacy.

Carolwood Foundation and Related Exhibits

The Carolwood Foundation preserves Walt Disney’s railroad legacy and interprets the relationships among the Carolwood Pacific, Disneyland Railroad, Disney attraction design, and the broader live-steam hobby. Carolwood public days also include the original Disneyland combine and Ollie Johnston’s Victorian train depot.

Public Railroad Experience

LALSRM offers visitors a working railroad experience rather than only static exhibits. Public rides allow passengers to experience miniature trains operating over track and structures built using many of the same principles as full-size railroads.

Schedules can change because of weather, maintenance, club meets, and special events, so visitors should verify current operations before traveling.
