A new Western Rail Archive video is now available on YouTube: a ride on Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner from Santa Barbara to Oceanside on Labor Day, September 3, 2018, presented with natural sound and the conductors’ station announcements.

The video opens at the Santa Barbara depot with northbound Pacific Surfliner train 763, led by F59PHI No. 459, followed by the northbound Coast Starlight, train No. 14, led by P42s Nos. 183 and 63.

We rode southbound Pacific Surfliner train No. 782, which runs from Goleta to San Diego, from Santa Barbara to Oceanside.

From there, the window view follows the line through Ventura, the yard departing Oxnard, Camarillo, Simi Valley, Chatsworth, the freight yard next to Van Nuys station, Burbank Airport, and Glendale to Los Angeles Union Station. It then continues through Fullerton, Anaheim, and Santa Ana, through Laguna Niguel toward San Juan Capistrano, and along the coast at San Clemente and past San Onofre before ending in Oceanside.

Also seen along the way: Union Pacific No. 9088, Amtrak No. 460, and Surfliner car “Point Buchon.”
