Welcome to Western Rail Archive

Preserving the Railroads, Places, and Stories of the American West

When Western Rail Archive was first envisioned, the goal was simple: create a home for railroad history, preservation, photography, and firsthand stories from across the American West, with a special focus on California and the Southwest.

Today, I’m excited to share that the project has officially moved beyond the planning stage and into active development.

Over the past several weeks, a tremendous amount of work has taken place behind the scenes. While there is still much more to build, the foundation of the archive is now firmly in place.

What Has Been Completed

The website structure has been established and major sections are coming online.

A growing collection of pages covering railroads, locations, and railroad museums has already been created and cross-linked throughout the site. These pages are designed to provide historical context, preservation information, and connections to related places, equipment, and organizations.

Current development efforts have focused on:

  • Railroad company profiles
  • Historic and modern rail locations
  • Railroad museums and preservation organizations
  • Site navigation and internal linking
  • Archive organization and future content structure

This groundwork creates the framework that future articles, photographs, videos, and historical research will build upon.

The Gallery Is Coming Soon

One of the most anticipated sections of the archive is the photo gallery.

The gallery software has been installed and configured, and we are currently waiting for final connectivity issues to be resolved before making it publicly available.

Once online, the gallery will become home to thousands of railroad photographs, historical images, station documentation, museum visits, excursion coverage, and preservation records collected over many years.

The goal is not simply to display photographs, but to create a searchable historical resource that helps tell the stories behind the images.

Western Rail Archive on YouTube

Another major milestone has been reached with the launch of the Western Rail Archive YouTube presence.

The first video has been completed and is currently being prepared for publication. This marks the beginning of a broader effort to preserve and share railroad-related content through video.

Future video releases may include:

  • Railroad history features
  • Museum coverage
  • Historic footage
  • Route overviews
  • Preservation projects
  • Station and location profiles
  • Railfanning and documentary-style content

Video will become an important extension of the archive, allowing stories to be told in ways that go beyond text and photographs alone.

What’s Next

With the site’s foundation now established, the next phase of development will focus on expanding content and growing the archive itself.

Upcoming projects include:

  • Additional railroad profiles
  • More location and museum coverage
  • Route pages covering major western rail corridors
  • Equipment and locomotive histories
  • Expanded photo galleries
  • Original feature articles
  • Historical research projects
  • Personal stories and firsthand accounts from decades of railroad photography and travel

Many of these stories have never been published online before, while others will draw from material originally shared on earlier websites and archives that are now being preserved for future generations.

Building an Archive, Not Just a Website

Western Rail Archive was never intended to be a news site or social media feed.

The goal is to create a long-term historical resource that documents railroading, preservation, infrastructure, equipment, and the communities connected to them. In an era when websites disappear, photographs are lost, and social media posts fade away, preserving railroad history has become more important than ever.

This project is still in its early days, but the tracks have been laid.

Thank you for following along as Western Rail Archive continues to grow. More updates, photographs, videos, and stories are on the way.

Welcome aboard.
